Hello everybody and happy new year! Can you believe it’s the start of a new decade?? Last year just flew by in the blink of an eye. There have been some ups and downs in 2019 but the new year gives us all an opportunity to start over with a clean slate. This includes starting over with our goals and resolutions. Last year, I decided to try something new. Instead of writing down a list of goals and resolutions, I chose to focus on a word of the year (WOTY). This year, I decided to do the same and picked a new word to focus on. Keep reading for a recap of my 2019 word of the year, plus my 2020 word of the year!
Recap of my 2019 WOTY
In 2019, my word of the year was “abundance.” While Googling “abundance,” I stumbled upon some pages about living an “abundant life.” The term comes from the Bible verse, John 10:10b, and refers to abounding fullness of joy and strength for mind, body, and soul. That idea resonated with me and I realized that’s exactly what I wanted in 2019 — abounding fullness of joy and strength in all areas of my life.
More specifically, I experienced financial and occupational abundance in 2019. I used to dread going to work every day but now I’m happy to know that my efforts are appreciated. My new mindset earned me a nomination for the Administrative Employee of the Year award, as well as a 6.25% salary increase. For my birthday, I opened a high-yield savings account with an annual percentage yield (APY) of 2.08%. I’ve also made progress in paying off my student loans and raising my credit score. I finally got a 401(k) plan through my company. And to top it all off, I ended the year with a bonus that was 13% of my annual income! In 2019, I’m proud to say that I became financially smarter and saw abundance in my life. Now I’m excited to take what I learned in 2019 and move forward with my 2020 word of the year.
2020 Word of the Year: Streamline
After much thought, I’ve decided to choose “streamline” as my 2020 word of the year. Google defines “streamline” as:
streamline (v): make (an organization or system) more efficient and effective by employing faster or simpler working methods.
Throughout 2019, I realized I was wasting so much time thinking and not enough time doing. I spent all my time trying to create the perfect plan of action, I was actually procrastinating instead of being productive. I was unproductive at work, with my blog, and with my grad school apps. But not anymore! In 2020, I will automate and streamline as many tasks as possible. Streamlining my tasks will help me get things done more effectively and efficiently. Hopefully, the increased productivity will free up my time so I can focus more on my relationships and much-needed relaxation. I hope to spend more time being carefree and happy, rather than constantly being stressed and worried.
