Too Faced Better Than Sex vs. L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise

Hi everyone! I’ve previously used the Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara but didn’t want to keep spending $23 USD on it… just to throw it out two or three months later. Luckily, I recently found the perfect dupe for just $9.99 USD! It’s the L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara. So today, I will compare both mascaras to find out which one is better. Which mascara will it be — the original or the dupe? Keep reading to find out!

When the Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara was initially released, it instantly received great reviews from various websites and beauty gurus. The mascara retails for $23 USD and only comes in carbon black. The wand comes in an hourglass shape and promises greater length, volume, and curl to your lashes. The formula contains collagen and a firm-forming polymer, which provides smudge-proof, all day wear. Best of all, the Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara is vegan friendly!

The L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise is a new mascara recently released by L’Oreal. According to Ulta, it is L’Oreal’s “first mascara for voluptuous volume and length.” At $9.99 USD, the L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara is much more affordable than the Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara. Instead of coming in just one shade, the L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara comes in two shades — 1) black and 2) blackest black. It also has an hourglass-shaped wand, which provides a full fringe effect and dramatic volume. The formula is waterproof and “provides silky volume in one coat.”

Before & After Application

As you can see, my natural lashes are barely noticeable. But after applying the different mascaras on each side, there was a significant difference. I applied the L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise on the left side. And on the right side, I applied the Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara. There’s a huge difference between the two mascaras so let’s take a closer look!

Final Verdict

L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise (left side) vs. Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara (right side)

I hardly hear about dupes being better than the original product but I definitely prefer the L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara over the Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara. The Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara provides length and volume but fails to curl my lashes. The L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara actually provides more length and curl.

But I am sure the L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara worked better for me because of its waterproof formula. Regular mascaras don’t work as well for me. I know Too Faced recently released a waterproof version of the Better Than Sex mascara and I have yet to try it. Who knows? Maybe I’ll like it even more than the L’Oreal one!

So if you’re wondering whether or not to spend the money on the Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara, don’t do it. You can get the L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara for half the price and for better results.

  1. This L’Oreal mascara has really been the talk of the earth lately! That’s such a difference between the two mascaras on you! But mascaras are really personal. I haven’t tried the Too Faced one before but don’t think I will – I’m just not willing to spend so much on a mascara that might not work well on me.

    1. Yeah, there’s a HUGE difference between the mascaras! I tried the Too Faced one because everyone was raving about it when it first came out. But honestly, I’m more of a drugstore mascara type of girl. I figured if I’m going to change my mascara every 2-3 months, why would I spend so much money on a high end mascara? Although, I am willing to try the waterproof version of Better Than Sex to see if it works for me.

  2. Geez the packaging looks practically similar, even their product descriptions sound similar LOL.
Of course there can only be one that’s better, and this isn’t the first time I’ve heard the BTS mascara sucking, lots of people don’t like it and I think I’ve heard more bad reviews than good and I’ve also seen the results and I was never impressed. Good to know you don’t like it either, I trust your judgement. 🙂 I can’t buy any more mascaras as I have way too many now LOL

    1. Right? It’s almost SPOT ON! Like when I bought the L’Oreal mascara, I was like man… even the packaging and product details are VERY similar to the Too Faced one. It’s as if it was created to be a cheaper (and better) version of the Too Faced one. I really wanted to love the Too Faced one. Even though it gave me volume, it didn’t curl my lashes and that’s the bigger deciding factor for me.

Oh man, how do you do it?! There are so many mascaras I want to try but I feel like I have to use one for at least two months first. Good thing mascaras have a shorter life span than foundation so we can go through them faster!

      1. Exactly, it’s hard finding mascara that curls AND gives length and volume to your lashes. There’s so many out there that have those claims but not everyone’s lashes are the same lol.

Ahh, well I’ve gotten so many through subscription boxes that I haven’t even gotten the chance to buy the ones I want to try, How sad is that?! LMAO
I feel the same way though, just once or twice won’t cut it for me when trying a new mascara. I heard you have to wear the mascara a few times to “break it in” and I’ve noticed that to be true. The more you use it, the better it looks. Just opening it and trying and making up your mind after using it once isn’t enough. You have to use it constantly to see what you like and don’t like about it. But yeah! Thank goodness we can toss them after three months! I have to throw a bunch of mine away that I’ve stopped using but never threw away LOL. I need to seriously clean my vanity HAHAHAHA

    1. Girl, it’s amazing!! I was so surprised to find out it was better than the original. Unfortunately, most high-end mascaras bring my lashes down. BUT I have found that waterproof mascaras work better than non-waterproof for me. So I usually stick to waterproof mascaras.

  3. Awesome comparison Valerie! 😀
I just tried the Too Face Better Than Sex mascara recently and while it’s nice, it doesn’t give me amazing lashes (not a lot of length, and it flakes a bit). I can’t wait to try the L’Oreal one – your results are impressive with it!

    1. Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed this post.

I really wanted to like the Too Faced BTS mascara as well but it didn’t give the results I wanted. Surprisingly, the L’Oreal one did! And trust me, it definitely gives length without any flakes. You should try it when you can! x
