Hi everyone! As I mentioned in my previous post, I spent this last weekend in LA. I talked about going hiking, kayaking, shopping, and doing the Walk for PKD. As expected, things didn’t always go according to plan… mostly because time didn’t allow for it. But that’s what I love about traveling! You have to be spontaneous and open to trying new things. Here’s what I ended up doing during my spontaneous weekend in LA.
How to Spend a Spontaneous Weekend in LA
On Friday night, my sister and I drove towards LA after school and work were over. We waited until traffic hour cleared up and surprisingly, it was a smooth ride the whole way. I’ve always hated driving on the 5 but they’re finally done with construction. We got to my aunt’s house late at night so we couldn’t really go out. Instead, we had a quick dinner while catching up with one another. Then, we called it a night because we planned on hiking the next morning.
We wanted to go hiking but it was way too hot. We would’ve passed out from heat exhaustion. Instead, we went kayaking in Marina Del Rey. It was my first time and it was a very fun experience! I instantly fell in love with kayaking and I can’t wait to do it again.
After kayaking, we got lunch at a really neat sushi place called SUGARFISH. They serve their sushi Tokyo style, meaning you won’t see any fancy rolls on their menu. Instead, you’ll only see sashimi, nigiri, and hand rolls. And that’s just what I love! Our server recommended the Nozawa Trust Me combo, which consists of organic edamame, tuna sashimi, albacore sushi, salmon sushi, yellowtail sushi, halibut sushi, toro hand roll, blue crab hand roll, and a “daily special.” The daily special for Saturday was uni, which they ran out of before we got there. Regardless, their sushi was one of the best I’ve ever had. Not to mention, SUGARFISH gets their shipments daily so you know their fish is very fresh. They don’t take reservations but it’s definitely worth the wait!
And then, of course, I had to walk down a few shops to get froyo. If you don’t know me, you’ll quickly learn that I only like tart and pomegranate froyo with lots of fruit and mochi on top. It doesn’t matter where I go. That’s how I always get my froyo.
After lunch, we all went back to the house and napped to reenergize ourselves for the night.
When we finally refreshed ourselves, my sister and I headed to the Grove. We were starving and needed our parking ticket validated. So we got light appetizers at the farmers market. Basically, we got a Caprese salad and strawberry spinach salad. They were both so simple but so delicious!
Also, we wanted to do some shopping but the only store we went into was Topshop, where we got a few things. Then, we met up with our aunt and her husband at the Veggie Grill for dinner.
After dinner, we watched Pan at the Grove. It was a brilliant movie! It’s been one of my favorite Disney films since I was a kid. Plus, it was great to see the origins of the story come to life. When the movie ended, we parted ways. My aunt and her husband headed back home while my sister and I stopped by LACMA for a quick photo op.
On Sunday morning, we went to Santa Monica for the PKD Walk. As usual, there weren’t too many people participating but it’s always fun.
After the walk, we stopped by Urth Caffé for brunch. My sister and I shared the Margherita pizza.
That’s about it for my spontaneous weekend in LA. After brunch, we headed back to the house and relaxed before driving back home. I love LA so much, I already miss being there! I can’t wait to go back.
